Stump Grinding Maidstone

Tree stumps are the base part of a tree left behind after removal, but often they can get in the way, prevent building work and tree replanting, look unsightly, or spread disease through fungus to other plants and neighbouring trees.

Remove problematic stumps quickly and safely with Broadleaf Tree Surgery’s stump grinding & removal service for gardens and properties in Maidstone and across Kent.

What is Stump Grinding?

Speedy, cost-effective tree stump removal.

Stump grinding is the process of mechanically removing a tree stump by grinding it down below the surface level using specialist equipment, essentially removing the stump.

Once the stump is ground out, the remaining depression is backfilled with residual grindings. After a short period the area will compact down and you can reinstate it with top soil and lawn seed.

Typically, after stump grinding, the remaining lateral roots underground die on their own, meaning you don’t get any regrowth once the job is done.

Broadleaf's Stump Grinding Process

Our powerful stump grinder features a rotating metal cutting head with hardened tungsten teeth used for pulverising tree stump edges.

The equipment is handled by our professional tree surgeons as they gradually work the tree stump, grinding down the wood into shards until nothing is left. These wood chippings can then easily be cleared away.

Great work by the guys who came down!
Loads of tree stumps and a tree were grounded down and taken away

They cleaned up after them and worked super fast.
They explained they couldn’t stump grind one out due to their being flint however they worked as best they could and cut it down as far as they could go

    Would definitely recommend!

Required 2 x large ash trees and 2 x conifer trees cutting back due to being over grown, blocking the light and getting close to the corner of the house. Really pleased with the quality of work done and the team liaised with me throughout and cut back the trees to meet our requirements whilst maintaining their shape and appearance so they didn’t look odd. Left my garden nice a tidy and collected any stray branches from neighbouring properties leaving them tidy too. Overall really pleased and would definitely recommend this company for your tree needs.

The team provided a great service - tree removal, de-ivying, removing dead wood, pruning, and much more. They were incredibly professional and very friendly. I live in a conservation zone and they managed the whole process liaising with planning departments and officials. Despite terrible weather they did everything they said they would and more, and stuck to the budget. Their work was so good I even had long established neighbours asking for their details. I cannot recommend them highly enough and would use them again without any reservation.

Aaron was very responsive when I contacted him. He arranged for the trees to be trimmed but due to the snow couldn’t attend. He rearranged quickly within a week and the two men who came were brilliant. They were done in a few hours, were polite and checked we were happy with the work. They tied and left little to no mess. Very happy with the service and would definitely recommend.

Benefits of Stump Grinding vs Traditional Stump Removal

Stump grinding is different to the ‘traditional’ method of stump removal, which involves excavating a tree’s entire root network and disposing of the stump in its entirety. While this method is comprehensive, traditional stump removal also has numerous drawbacks compared to stump grinding.

    Stump Grinding Maidstone FAQs

Stump grinding, when done properly, does kill tree roots. Usually, most roots, if they aren’t obstructed by pipes or cables, can be dug out or ground away. Some deeper roots may remain after stump grinding. However, these usually die off over time as long as most of the tree structure is removed.
There are some things you can do to prepare for a stump grinding appointment before Broadleaf’s team of arborists arrive on-site:

    • Clear the area around the stump by removing debris such as leaves, branches, and rocks
    • Mark any known underground utilities such as gas lines and water pipes; this will help to prevent damage to your property during the stump grinding process
    • Create an easy route for our team to access the tree stump(s)
During the stump grinding process, you can expect our tree surgeons to take a few safety precautions, such as wearing gloves and goggles. They will also use a machine to grind away at the stump until it is completely removed, which will be loud. After the job is done, they will clean up any debris and mulch that is left behind.
Hiring a professional to remove your stump has several benefits. First, it will save you time and hassle. Second, professionals have the right equipment to do the job quickly and efficiently. Third, they can also provide you with advice on how to prevent stumps from growing back in the future.
Due to the nature of our work, we understand that not every job is the same and therefore it would be unfair to give you a price over the phone. If you’d like a free quotation and site visit, simply get in touch with our team, who will be happy to assist.
By having a site visit, you avoid any unexpected and unnecessary costs during the stump removal project. We will follow up on the site visit within 24-hours with a formalised quotation. If you are interested in any of our other tree and hedge services, we can also include that in your quotation. Our team is regulated by trading standards and follows their guidelines to ensure we champion the rights of our customers.
Yes, we do! We leave the area where we have been stump grinding nice and tidy. All waste generated by the tree work we carry out is taken away from the site. We use our wood chipper to mulch the arisings, and this is taken directly to our yard where it is processed into compost and re-used on a local farm as fertiliser. We try to be as green as possible at Broadleaf Tree Surgery Ltd, carrying out work as efficiently as possible to reduce our carbon footprint. For extra peace of mind, we are fully licensed and regulated to carry waste and dispose of it.
If you’d like to use the wood chips for your flower beds, paths, or garden, just let us know and we will be happy to leave them with you. We also understand that you may want to use the wood as firewood; if that’s the case, we will even cut it up and stack it for you!
As a professional company, we perform local authority checks on each and every one of our jobs. Our team have been dealing with local councils for years and have plenty of experience on where conservation areas are and what is and isn’t allowed. We don’t charge to do the planning applications or paperwork required, and we can offer advice on what is best for the ongoing management of your trees.
Trees, even stumps, are sometimes subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). This is because trees are an asset and contribute hugely to an area’s biodiversity as well as providing a certain level of aesthetic appeal. Many village centres are within a conservation area and many old and large, or particularly important trees are covered by a TPO.
The best time to have stump grinding done on your property is in the fall or winter. This is because the ground is typically softer during these times of year, which makes it easier for the machine to remove the stump. Additionally, there are typically fewer leaves on the trees, which means that the job will be less messy.
